The day after Taiwan’s DPP won the national election for the presidency, the island got some unwelcome news: the number of countries recognizing Taiwan has now dropped to an even dozen.

“The Government of the Republic of Nauru today announces that, in the best interests of the Republic and people of Nauru, we will be moving to the One-China Principle that is in line with UN Resolution 2758 which recognizes the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.) as the sole legal Government representing the whole of China,” says the Jan. 15 press release issued by that nation’s government.

“This means that the Republic of Nauru will no longer recognize the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a separate country, but rather as an inalienable part of China’s territory,” the statement continues.

UN Resolution 2758, passed in 1971, shifted UN recognition of China from Taipei to Beijing, from the Republic of China to the People’s Republic of China.
